Overview
Also known as Electrical and Electronics Installers and Repairers, Home Electronic Repair Technician, Electronics Repair Technician, Electronic Home Entertainment Equipment Installers and Repairers, Field Technician, are responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining a wide variety of electronic devices.
Typical day at work
Using hand tools and soldering iron, disassemble the entertainment equipment and fix, remove, or change damaged, rusty or faulty parts and cables
Use electrical test equipment to evaluate continuity in electrical circuits or components
Based on wiring diagrams and using tools, lay out and connect electrical wiring between controls and equipment
Installation, operation, and maintenance of electronic appliances or accessories such as televisions, radios, video recorders, etc.
Using hand and power tools and testing devices such as resistance meters and oscilloscopes, calibrate and test equipment and locate faults in circuits and components
Conferring with clients to assess the extent of the issues or to clarify the repairs
Tune or alter the equipment and instruments according to requirements, manuals, and sketches, to achieve maximum visual or auditory reception
Ensure and instruct on safe and proper consumer use of appliances
Calculate charges of the labour and material costs
Read and view electronic circuit diagrams, function block diagrams, specifications, engineering drawings, and manuals for the service
Keep accounts of work orders and repair and maintenance results
Keep records of work orders and test and maintenance reports
Make service calls to client for repair units, or returning units to shops for large repairs.
Abilities and Aptitude needed
Since the work includes practical activity, hands-on problems and solutions, Electronic Repairer should be comfortable working with materials, tools, and machinery. This requires manual dexterity, precision, and eye for detail, steady hand, good eye-hand co-ordination, accuracy, and careful equipment monitoring.
They need physical stamina as they may work on their feet for long periods, travel for work, and lift heavy equipment. They should also be flexible to work in all kinds of environments. They must be able to manage time and prioritize tasks effectively while maintaining the quality of work.
They need to have critical thinking and problem-solving skills to find solutions to complex problems and draw conclusions from errors and its solutions in the systems through sound reasoning and judgment.
They also require good verbal communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills to understand customer’s complaints about the services.

Career outlook
Most Electronic Repairer work full-time for construction contractors, or at manufacturing plants, power stations, on-going job sites, etc. or remain self-employed. They can be employed to work in schools, hospitals, organizations, residencies, etc. At times, they may have to travel to multiple locations in the same day. Sometimes the work involves outdoor tasks in extreme weather conditions or heights.
One may require making daily service calls to various customers. They may be called to work on odd hours in case when customer requires immediate help or in emergency situations. Overtime may be expected in peak or summers or winters when the need of heating or cooling systems is the most. They regularly travel to various work sites.
