How to become a Music Director

Music directors or music conductors primarily lead and prepare music groups be it a band, choir or an orchestra to ensure they play at the right speed, volume, pitch and rhythm. They are seasoned professionals who hold auditions, prepare rehearsal schedules, select music, delegate tasks, among other things. As a music director, one should understand the musicians involved; their strengths and weaknesses and accordingly direct them to bring out their best.  Music directors aim to capture the essence of the piece of music by efficiently guiding the musicians to perform harmonically. Music directors may work with a variety of musical groups such as church choirs, high school or college bands, orchestras, some accompanied with dance and opera companies. 

Music director job description consists of the following tasks:

• Plan performance schedule 

• Coordinate with appropriate contacts to set up performances

• Assess the rhythm, tone, voice, and skills of each musician to gauge their individual abilities 

• Choose the appropriate music and establish the right sound for the show

• Conduct and supervise group rehearsals and train the performers

• Devise budgets and ensure it is adhered to

• Oversee production

• Hold auditions

In order to excel in any field, aspirants must possess certain attributes that complement the job role. In a similar fashion, few music director skills required are excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, observational skills, organizational skills, leadership skills, time management skills and multitasking skills. It goes without saying that music director aspirants must be extremely passionate about music, have excellent knowledge and understanding of music theory, techniques and performances and be proficient in at least one performance area be it keyboard or singing. Besides, a music director should be able to give clear instructions and make favourable decisions under pressure.
